PIAS distribution stock destroyed during night of riots

Sony's Enfield warehouse balze- photo from Reuters-please dont sue me 🙂

Details of PIAS fundraiser here.

PIAS, the largest distributor of Independent music, has had its stock go up in flames during the London riots.

The distributor supplies record shops with CD’s Vinyl and DVD’s by artists such as The XX and Darwin Deez as well as established artists including Arctic Monkeys and The Prodigy.

Over 150 indie labels including Domino and 4AD coordinate their distribution through PIAS whose warehouse was on Sony’s DADC site in Enfield North London, an area affected by London’s riots.

The full scale of the blaze damage is unconfirmed however labels, Rock Action and Chemikal Underground, have confirmed they are affected, as well as Angular losing their entire stock.

An official PIAS statement on their website reads:

“There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for PIAS in the UK and Ireland.

“PIAS is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. PIAS’s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected.

“More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.”

Earlier PIAS’ Darren Hemmings said on Twitter: ” OK: I can confirm that the Sony DADC warehouse in Enfield did burn to the ground, and Sony holds PIAS stock.”

Rough Trades Spencer Hickman Tweted: ‘Pias distribution got burnt to the ground last night, they look after XL group, domino in fact most of the big indies.
“More small companies hit in what could well prove to be the death knell of huge amounts of (independent) mom and pop businesses”

A Sony spokesperson said they cannot yet assess the scale of damage as parts of the building were still burning and could not be accessed.

“There will likely be some impact on deliveries,” she added.

PIAS offices are fortunately not on the site and our support goes out to those working at PIAS and all the hard working labels affected.

Sony have stated the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

If you have any spare time today, grab a brush and some gloves and follow @riotcleanup to see where you can help clear the damage.
A fundraiser for the labels who have lost their stock and livelihods has been set up, you can donate below. (Please note The Guild is not part and is not connected with the organisation of this funtraising page.)
